Jammu & Kashmir Government Forms Committee for Fee Structure of Professional Colleges

The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has taken a significant step towards regulating the fee structure of professional colleges within the union territory. In adherence to the directives from the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, the government has sanctioned the establishment of a committee dedicated to this cause.

Official Sanction and Committee Composition

According to Government Order No.1120-JK(GAD) of 2024, dated May 31, 2024, the committee’s formation follows the directions of the Supreme Court in the Writ Petition (C) 350 of 1993, titled Islamic Academy of Education & another versus State of Karnataka and others. The order, issued by the General Administration Department of J&K, has appointed the following members to the committee:

  1. Justice Shri Maharaj Krishan Hanjura (Retd.) – Chairman
  2. Representative of the Medical Council of India, now known as the National Medical Commission – Member
  3. Administrative Secretary, Higher Education Department – Member Secretary (for matters relating to the Higher Education Department)
  4. Administrative Secretary, Skill Development Department – Member Secretary (for matters relating to the Skill Development Department)
  5. Administrative Secretary, Health & Medical Education Department – Member Secretary (for matters relating to the Health & Medical Education Department)

Terms of Reference and Tenure

The committee’s primary function will be to strictly follow the Supreme Court’s directions regarding fee structure in professional colleges. Its tenure is set for a period of one year or until further orders are received, whichever occurs first. The committee will be serviced by the Health & Medical Education Department and will report to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.

The formation of this committee is a crucial step toward ensuring fair and transparent fee structures that align with the legal guidelines set forth by the Supreme Court.
